Greenhouse Gases
A tiny number of gases in the atmosphere are able to trap heat around the Earth. Without them, heat would be lost into space and we'd freeze. The trapping of heat around the Earth is called the greenhouse effect, because glass in a greenhouse traps heat in a similar way, keeping the inside of the greenhouse warm.
